JAMESY THE TRUE
BIO
Jamesy The True is a Canadian singer-songwriter based in British Columbia. Exclaim! magazine says, "The burning wail of the harmonica and smouldering lyrics help to distinguish Jamesy The True from the thousands of others in the folk-roots genre."
Jamesy has been a sideman as a harmonica player in various projects over the years, including his ongoing work with the Western Canadian music collective The Garage Band Cooperative.
"Janina Today" is Jamesy's new single, and One's Own Bones is his second full-length album as a solo artist, following 2022's "Snow and the Apple Tree," which he wrote about the heartbreaking life story of Linda Bishop (a story also depicted in the 2016 documentary film God Knows Where I Am).
As a harmonica player, Jamesy's influences include James Cotton and Junior Wells. As a singer-songwriter, his influences include Nick Drake, Rodriguez, Hayden, Damien Rice, Glen Hansard, Keaton Henson, City and Colour, Aimee Mann, Gillian Welch, and Radiohead.
Monday Magazine says Jamesy The True's music is comprised of "haunting vocals and strong songwriting."
Lyrically, his new album One's Own Bones explores friendship, mortality, spirituality, love-gone-south, unrequited love, and unbridled hope in the face of adversity. Musically, while the album stays true to the folk genre, it veers frequently into the realm of experimental and atmospheric - some might even say psychedelic - in songs like In This Town, Yemaya and the Moon, Providence and Pretty Things, and the instrumental El Cielo. 89.5 CIUT's Ruby Slippers Show says of the album, "Jamesy never fails to surprise. This album showcases the breadth of his talent and keeps you listening to the end."
